What is DHA? How does it work?
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a naturally-occurring compound derived from vegetables such as beets or sugar cane. In 1957, a doctor discovered DHA causes a simple sugar-amino acid interaction that colors the outermost layer of skin. Thanks to her finding, the first "self-tanning" product was introduced in 1960. Since then, DHA has become the most popular ingredient is sunless tanning products — including MagicTan.

Is DHA safe to use?
More than 30 years ago, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) evaluated the safety and toxicology of DHA. DHA was approved for all topical skin applications as a color additive. Plus, DHA has been used as a color additive in numerous food and cosmetic products for several years.

Should I avoid contact with DHA in any way?
At the time of FDA evaluation, the only way to apply DHA was by hand via a lotion or cream form. Through DHA was completely approved for topical use on the skin, manufacturers never applied for approval of use on the eyes, nasal passages or internally.

When applying DHA in a spray or mist form, like the MagicTan system, it may be difficult to avoid exposure to certain areas. The FDA has suggested, when using DHA in a mist or aerosol form, that consumers take the following simple measures:

• Cover the area of the eyes
• Protect the lips and nasal passages
• Avoid inhalation or ingestion of the product

Is MagicTan Approved for use by the FDA?
all of the ingredients in the MagicTan solution have been tested and approved for safety by the FDA. However, the FDa has not tested the application of DHA in a mist or aerosol form.

Is MagicTan safe?
Since the MagicTan system was developed, consumers have enjoyed more than 1 million sunless tanning sessions with no documented reports of any adverse effects. Coupled with the simple measures recommended by the FDA, MagicTan remains one of the safest ways to get the golden appearance of a tan.

What techniques can I use to follow the FDA guidelines for safety?
MagicTan recommends the use of Winkies®, an inexpensive and disposable eye shield that fits securely over your eye area. MagicTan also suggests covering your lips with a lip balm or similar product. To protect nasal passages and avoid inhalations, use an in-nose filter or a small amount of cotton inserted into each nostril. Finally, keep your mouth closed during your MagicTan session.

What is an airbrush tan?
If you don't need an all-over tan, or if you have a few spots that are a little paler than the rest of you, you might consider an Norvell Airbrush Tan. It's very similar to other sunless tanning systems like MagicTan and Mystic, only targeted to specific spots or areas of your body. If all you want to tan is your legs, airbrush tanning is your solution. It's also great for people who can't tolerate confined spaces, like a tanning booth.
